I 2011 tok mennesker i flere land i Midt-Østen og Nord-Afrika til gatene og krevde samfunnsendringer i opprørene som ble kjent som den arabiske våren. 27.mars ønsker SAIH Trondheim velkommen til et seminar på SELLANRAA/Litteraturhuset i Trondheim om den politiske situasjonen og studenters rettigheter i noen av disse landene i dag. Seminaret vil bli holdt på engelsk, og er en del av SAIHs vårkampanje om studenters rettigheter og akademisk frihet.
Vi har gleden av å ha studentene Khaled Zaza fra Libanon, Mostafa El-Sayed fra Egypt og Bashar Marhoon fra Bahrain med oss i vårt panel sammen med Charles Butcher, førsteamanuensis i Statsvitenskap ved NTNU. Zaza og El-Sayed er begge i Norge gjennom Students at Risk-programmet, mens Marhoon er en SAIH-aktivist ved NMBU. De vil gi oss innsikt i hvordan studenters rettigheter og forholdene for politisk aktivisme i deres hjemland ble påvirket av den arabiske våren, og hvordan situasjonen er i dag. Butcher vil gi en introduksjon til temaet.

Students at Risk (StAR) er et program som gir studentaktivister som har blitt truet, forfulgt eller utvist fra hjemlandet på grunn av sitt engasjement en sjanse til å fullføre utdanninga si i Norge. Med en akademisk grad og et internasjonalt nettverk har studentene et bedre utgangspunkt og er bedre rustet til å fortsette kampen for menneskerettigheter og demokrati. In 2011 people across many countries in the Middle East and North Africa took to the streets and demanded social change, in the uprisings that are known as the Arab Spring. On the 27th of March at Litteraturhuset SAIH Trondheimwelcomes you to a seminar about the political situation and students’ rights in some of these countries today. The event will be held in English, and is a part of SAIH’s Spring Campaign on students’ rights and academic freedom.

We are thrilled to have the students Khaled Zaza from Lebanon, Mostafa El-Sayed from Egypt and Bashar Marhoon from Bahrain in our panel together with Charles Butcher, associate professor in Political Science at NTNU. El-Sayed and Zaza are both in Norway through the Students at Risk program, while Marhoon is a SAIH activist at NMBU. They will give us insight in how students’ rights and the conditions for political activism were affected by the Arab Spring in their countries, and what the political situation is like today. Butcher will be giving an introduction about the Arab Spring.

Students at Risk (StAR) is a programme that gives student activists, who have experienced persecution, threats or expulsion from their learning institution because of their peaceful activism and fight for human rights and democratic change, a chance to finish their education abroad. With an academic degree and an international network, the students are better equipped to return home and continue the fight for human rights and democracy.
