Den 29. april arrangerer Pan-African Student Union Trondheim, Litteraturhuset i Trondheim og Fellesrådet for Afrika en samtale om den geopolitiske utviklingen i Vest-Afrika med foredragsholderne Professor Patricia Daley og Samba Dialimpa Badji.

I de siste årene har Sahel-regionen i Vest-Afrika ikke bare opplevd en bølge av regimeskifter og eskalerende politisk og sivil uro, men har også vært vitne til en betydelig økning i kritikk mot vestlig innflytelse i regionen. Dette har ført til diskusjoner om rollen eksterne aktører har i å forme det sosio-politiske landskapet i Sahel-regionen.

Professor Patricia Daley er professor i menneskelig geografi i Afrika ved University of Oxford. Hun er også Helen Morag Fellow i geografi ved Jesus College, Oxford, hvor hun var viserektor fra 2018 til 2021, og ble valgt til universitetsrådet i 2021. Hennes nåværende forskningsinteresser er den politiske økonomien til befolkningsmigrasjon og bosetning (tvungen migrasjon, identitetspolitikk og statsborgerskap), krysningen av rom, kjønn, militarisme, seksuell vold og fred (feministisk geopolitikk), rasistiske hierarkier og vold (geografier av rasialisering og kolonialitet ved bruk av Critical Race Theory og avkoloniserende metodologier), forholdet mellom bevaring, ressursutvinning og rurale levebrød (politisk økologi).

Samba Dialimpa Badji er forskningsstipendiat og PhD-kandidat ved OsloMet University. Sambas nåværende forskning handler om rollen til digital media i væpnede konflikter i Etiopia og Mali. Han er interessert i å forstå hvordan desinformasjon sprer seg gjennom digital media og hvilke konsekvenser det har i konflikter. Samba har jobbet for Africa Check, en faktasjekkorganisasjon som arbeider med å bekjempe desinformasjon og fremme mediekompetanse i Afrika.

The current geo-political development in West-Africa

On the 29th of April, Pan-African Student Union Trondheim, Litteraturhuset i Trondheim and Fellesrådet for Afrika are arranging a conversation on the geopolitical development in West-Africa with the speakers Professor Patricia Daley and Samba Dialimpa Badji.

In recent years, the Sahel region of West Africa has not only experienced a surge in regime changes and escalating political and civil unrest but has also witnessed a notable rise in criticism against Western influence in the region. This heightened scrutiny has brought to the forefront complex discussions surrounding the role of external actors in shaping the socio-political landscape of the Sahel.

Join us for an enlightening seminar that delves deep into the intricate geopolitical dynamics of West Africa. Against a backdrop of escalating challenges, including terrorism, conflict, resource exploitation, and gender disparities, it is imperative to grasp the multifaceted forces shaping the region’s political, social, and economic realities. In this event, we will explore critical themes such as the repercussions of ineffective counterterrorism strategies, the relationship between extractive industries, militarization and the gender dynamics within geopolitical transformations.

Professor Patricia Daley is professor of the Human Geography of Africa at the University of Oxford. She is also the Helen Morag Fellow in Geography at Jesus College, Oxford, where she served as Vice-Principal from 2018 to 2021 and was elected to the University Council in 2021. Her current research interests are the political economy of population migration and settlement (forced migration, identity politics and citizenship), the intersection of space, gender, militarism, sexual violence and peace (feminist geo-politics), racial hierarchies and violence (geographies of racialization and coloniality using Critical Race Theory and decolonizing methodologies), the relationship between conservation, resource extraction, and rural livelihoods (political ecology). 

Samba Dialimpa Badji is a research fellow and a PhD candidate at OsloMet University. Samba’s current research is on the role of digital media in the armed conflicts in Ethiopia and Mali. He is interested in understanding how misinformation is spreading through digital media and what consequences that has in conflicts. Samba has worked for Africa Check, a fact-checking organization working on tackling misinformation and promoting media literacy in Africa.
